At MAIER Vintage, our teams select pre-owned watches every day based on their history, character, and horological appeal. At this store dedicated to secondhand timepieces, each piece is carefully chosen to offer enthusiasts and collectors alike iconic, rare, or unique models that embody a rich heritage. For this episode, head to 16 rue des Archers in Lyon, at the MAIER Vintage boutique. Killian Coutelet, the boutique’s assistant manager, shares his perspective on three watches, each embodying a different facet of collectible watchmaking: iconic design, space exploration, and vintage military inspiration.
Through this selection, Killian highlights timepieces with very distinct personalities, chosen for their aesthetics, their history, and their ability to stand the test of time without losing their appeal. These three pre-owned models serve as a reminder that a watch is more than just its mechanics: it also tells the story of an era, a vision, and sometimes even a true legend.

“The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15450ST.OO.1256ST.02 perfectly embodies the balance between bold design and everyday elegance,” says Killian. “With its 37-mm stainless steel case, it retains all the iconic presence of the Royal Oak, while offering particularly harmonious proportions on the wrist. It’s a watch that immediately catches the eye, yet never tries to be too much.”
“Its ruthenium-gray dial, adorned with the Grande Tapisserie pattern, lends great depth to the piece,” he continues. “Depending on the light, the reflections shift and reveal the full richness of this textured finish. The octagonal bezel, visible screws, and integrated steel bracelet naturally evoke the highly architectural DNA of the Royal Oak, which has become one of the most recognizable designs in contemporary watchmaking.”
“What I particularly like about this model is its versatility,” Killian emphasizes. “It has the sporty character of a steel watch, but also a true sophistication in its finishes. Powered by an automatic movement, it appeals equally to collectors and to those seeking a bold, reliable, and timeless piece on the pre-owned market. It’s typically the kind of watch that stands the test of time without losing any of its desirability.”
“The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XIII 3595.52 is one of those watches that immediately tells a story,” says Killian. “Created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, it embodies all the emotional depth of space exploration. This mission, which remains famous for its intensity and for the ingenuity demonstrated by the NASA teams, gives this Speedmaster a very special resonance.”
“Visually, this model retains the essential design elements of the classic Moonwatch, with its 42-mm stainless steel case, Hesalite crystal, and highly legible black dial,” he continues. “But the detail that makes all the difference is, of course, the Apollo XIII patch at the 9 o’clock position. It adds a touch of color and history without ever disrupting the balance of the dial. On some examples, the patch may even develop a unique patina over time, further enhancing the piece’s charm and authenticity.”
“What makes this model particularly desirable is its rarity,” Killian notes. “With only 999 pieces produced, it appeals to Speedmaster enthusiasts as well as collectors who appreciate the great milestones in space exploration. Its hand-wound Caliber 861 evokes the spirit of the brand’s historic chronographs, while the case back, engraved with “Apollo 13 Limited Series” and the watch’s individual number, underscores its status as a limited edition. It is a Speedmaster that is at once technical, symbolic, and deeply endearing.”
“The Panerai Radiomir California 47 PAM00931 is a watch that fully embraces its heritage,” explains Killian. “It draws direct inspiration from the first Radiomir models created in the 1930s for the Italian Navy, with a focus on immediate readability, ruggedness, and a striking presence on the wrist. It’s a timepiece that doesn’t seek to be discreet, but rather captivates with its bold character. ”
“Its California dial is one of its most distinctive features,” he notes. “The alternation of Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, and hour markers creates a highly graphic, almost instinctive read. Combined with a shaded brown hue—lighter in the center and darker at the edges—it lends a very distinctive vintage warmth. The blued hands round out the design with a touch of elegance, while retaining Panerai’s signature utilitarian spirit.”
“What makes this model interesting is the way it reinterprets a historic military design with a contemporary twist,” he concludes. “Its 47-mm cushion-shaped steel case, wire lugs, and brown leather strap give it a real presence, as well as an instantly recognizable identity. Powered by the hand-wound P.3000 in-house caliber, offering approximately three days of power reserve, this Radiomir California brings together everything that enthusiasts look for in a Panerai: a bold aesthetic, simple and robust mechanics, and a direct link to the brand’s history.”
