WATCH WATER RESISTANCE, HOW DOES IT WORK?

Water resistance is how well sealed the watch is against liquid, gas and even dust.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE CLASSIFICATION FOR WATCH WATER RESISTANCE

A watch’s water resistance is measured in several levels. These levels are represented by the unit ATM (atmospheres) and is always provided by the manufacturer. This unit of measurement is unique to watchmaking and shows the maximum pressure level that a watch can resist. For comparison, 1 ATM is the equivalent of the atmospheric pressure on land. We must try to forget the common misconception that the number of metres found next to an ATM measurement (e.g. 1 ATM - 10 metres) means that you can dive down 10 metres with your watch. This is completely wrong.

ATM CLASSIFICATION

3 ATM / 30 BAR / 30 METRES
This level of resistance will protect your watch against splashes, rain and humidity. You can keep it on when taking a shower or doing the dishes.

5 ATM / 50 BAR / 50 METRES
You can wear a 5 ATM / 50 metres watch under water. You can keep it on in the shower or swimming pool provided you don’t dive with it.

10 ATM / 10 BAR / 100 METRES
You can wear this type of water-resistant watch during all times in water. You can go swimming in the pool or partake in more strenuous and vigorous water sports. You can also go diving.

20 ATM / 20 BAR / 200 METRES
This type of watch is perfect for scuba diving and deep dives. However, it is best to not wear it at a depth below 50 metres.

30 ATM / 30 BAR / 300 METRES
Watches with a water resistance of 30 ATM / 300 metres are suitable for deep sea diving and up to saturation. These watches offer the highest resistance to pressure.
